What is a CI?

A Certificate of Identity (CI) is an identity document issued by the Myanmar authorities to Myanmar nationals working in Thailand. It is used in place of a passport for working and for travel between Thailand and Myanmar.

A CI can be used for the visa, work permit and 90-day report in the same way as a passport.

CI vs passport — what’s the difference?

CI PJ passport
Cover colour Green Red
Travel Thailand–Myanmar only Most can travel to other countries, but a PJ issued in Thailand (e.g. converted from a CI in Samut Sakhon/Mahachai) may be stamped “Thailand only” — check the stamp in the book
Documents from Myanmar Required documents are as specified by the CI centre Full Myanmar ID card and household registration documents required
Cost Lower Higher
Best for Workers who will keep working in Thailand Workers who may work in other countries or need it for other transactions

💡 Not sure which to choose? If the employee works only in Thailand, a CI is usually the better fit. Message us on LINE for advice.

This service depends on whether the Myanmar authorities allow the change in Thailand at the time — message us on LINE to check first.

Documents may change according to announcements by the Myanmar authorities. We will give you the latest list before we start.

How our service works

  1. Send a photo of the current CI — via LINE; we check its validity, the visa and the worker’s group
  2. Recommend CI or PJ — Based on the documents the worker has and how it will be used
  3. Prepare documents and book an appointment — We accompany the worker to apply at the designated centre
  4. Collect the new document
  5. Transfer the visa to the new document — We file at the immigration office and update the work permit details

No. A CI is valid only for travel between Thailand and Myanmar. To travel to other countries, the worker must change to a passport.

Can a CI be changed to a passport?
It depends on whether the change is open in Thailand at the time, and a complete Myanmar ID card/household registration is required. Message us on LINE to check first.

The CI has expired but the visa hasn’t — what should we do?
Get a new document, then transfer the visa stamp to it. Message us on LINE and we’ll check for you.

A Myanmar worker is going home — what else needs to be prepared?
In addition to a Re-entry Permit, there are currently certificate requirements for Myanmar workers returning to their country. Message us on LINE to check before travelling → See Re-entry Permit
